My mom took a picture of my sister Katie and I when she was a newborn. I love it so much. I think I was wearing a white undershirt and she was wearing a white onesie and it was taken in bright light after a bath. I'll probably spend my life trying to recreate that photo. Oh, to be the lighthearted child in the photo again with so much wonderful ahead of me. So much fun to be had with that sister and my other incredible sister and brother. Oh, to be the mother of the tiny children in the photo now. My blessings sometimes cause me to catch my breath.

A historical adventure, naturally
Melissa found a fun museum I hadn't heard about and we went to check it out. They had a lot of animals, to my surprise! It was such a pleasant day outside and so welcome, after our chilly winter. We went to City Park afterwards, which was stinky due to LOTs of gross dead fish that did not last the intense winter cold. And, because we can't get enough of partying with these guys, we took linner back to the their house and played while they got a moving estimate. Boo, I'm not ready yet to part ways with the friends we've made in Iowa.
Molly's Cupcakes
Recently an adorable cupcake shop named "Molly's Cupcakes" opened up down the street from us. Of course we had to go there to celebrate Molly becoming half a year old! Unfortunately she couldn't eat any of them...which I realized once we were there. But we did get some cute pictures of her in the store. That was also kind of poor planning on my part because the kids went nutso as soon as we got there and started doing acrobatics on these sweet swing seats. Originally, I thought they'd be amazing in a home, namely ours one day. After this experience I realized it's hard enough to get them to stay in a regular chair, and this would probably only multiply that frustration. Oh well. It was a fun, and crazy, afternoon romp. Also, the story behind the shop is adorable. The man who started it had a third grade teacher who brought cupcakes in for each of her students' birthdays, and her name was Molly. I love that! The chairs and tables are school room style and charming as can be. I think it's funny that he has shops in NYC, Chicago, Iowa City and North Liberty. What??
Obviously I was experimenting with my camera and went a little overboard.
The Magical Age of Three
My last post went in a totally different direction than I had intended. What I started to write about was how wonderful Lucy is at three years old! Her outlook on life is fun and positive and cuddly. The other night I was feeling frustrated and grumpy and, unfortunately, it was apparent to her. She just watched me quietly and would inject an "I love you" whenever she felt appropriate. She does this ALL the time. To me and to everyone in the family. She probably randomly tells someone she loves them fifteen times a day. The other night we were sitting on the couch and she rested her head on my shoulder, sighed a big sigh and said "Ah, let's cuddle." She is also quick to forgive those who offend her and she loves, probably above all, spending time with Molly. The other day I overheard her say "Molly, we're the best sisters!" I love her little sweet nature, and I learn so much from her, and by her actions.
A few other funny things about Lucy...whenever we go to a doctor appointment for someone in the family, anyone, she will start talking at the beginning of the appointment and she won't stop until we leave. She just spouts off random facts or events in her life. For the most part, the nurses and doctors just laugh and laugh. Some seem annoyed but they can deal with it. I usually have to ask her to be quick when it's time for them to find out about the actual patient.
Recently when I was making hot chocolate, she got really upset. Finally she told me "But, Mom, I like WARM chocolate!"
We bought Kevin the game Apples to Apples for his birthday. We had a great time playing as a family and probably played 20 times in just a few days. We would read the cards to Lucy and she would squeal after each one "Oh, I like that one!" It was a little tough pinning her down to actually pick a favorite.
Kids and stages are funny. I remember three being hard with my older two. I think. Time plays tricks and looking back at any stage makes me long to cuddle the, usually, chubbier, younger version of my child. I was just looking at photos last night from two summers ago. Peter was so much rounder than his growing-like-a-weed current self. His hair was bright blonde, it was a summer shot, and long. We just buzzed all of his hair off last night because we discovered on Sunday that Jillian had head lice:/, which made me miss that beautiful hair even more. So I truly can't remember what was hard before. I can recall moments of frustration, at first with them, and then with myself for not responding well. Moments I responded unjustly because of, honestly, my own lack of understanding as a parent and because I failed to control my temper. Looking back, I know those moments were not nothing. They affect my children's confidence today. Thinking of such moments makes me so grateful for the Atonement. Because I am human, I cannot be the perfect nurturer I want to be, and though I am constantly striving, sometimes I fail even to strive. And for those moments, there is the Atonement. There is apologizing and asking forgiveness from my children. Listening to General Conference this weekend made me long to rid my life of the unnecessary that can be like literal clouds, overshadowing the important, my efforts to teach the gospel in my home. The desire for the gospel to be forefront in our home is why I do what I do...but how often I forget!
Several things stood out to me from conference but I'll just record a couple here. Elder Bednar counseled us to "be careful not to carry around those nice but unnecessary things that can weigh us down and distract us." Hit the nail on the head. And from President Monson:
- I never feel a tinge of regret for being too kind.
- Every day we are given opportunities to show kindness.
- Why is it that those we love the most become the targets of our harsh words?
- Bottom line is the reasons do not matter!
- Let us not demean or belittle. Build and encourage. We must be careful to not destroy confidence!
- Only forgiveness heals.
Wise words from a man who has lived them. In the Ensign this month there were two stories that stood out to me about his life that I want to remember and emulate.
We can be positive and we can be happy.
In the Pearl of Great Price, the Prophet Joseph Smith describes his “cheery temperament” (Joseph Smith—History 1:28). “Cheery” also describes President Monson.
On one occasion President Monson said: “We … can choose to have a positive attitude. We can’t direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails. In other words, we can choose to be happy and positive, regardless of what comes our way.”
One day I was waiting outside the First Presidency boardroom. I had been invited there to take part in a meeting to discuss temple matters. I sat quietly outside the room, alone. I thought the First Presidency was already meeting and that I would be invited to join them in a few minutes.
As I sat there, I could hear someone walking down the hall whistling. I thought to myself, “Someone doesn’t understand proper protocol. You don’t go walking around whistling outside the office of the President of the Church.”
A moment later the whistler walked around the corner—it was President Monson. He was happy, and he was positive. He greeted me warmly and said, “I guess we’ll start the meeting in a couple of minutes.”
Even with the weight of the whole Church on his shoulders, he is an example of happiness and he always has a positive attitude. We should be that way.
We can follow the promptings of the Spirit.
President Monson beautifully stated his devotion to the Lord and his commitment to following the promptings of the Spirit with these words: “The sweetest experience I know in life is to feel a prompting and act upon it and later find out that it was the fulfillment of someone’s prayer or someone’s need. And I always want the Lord to know that if He needs an errand run, Tom Monson will run that errand for Him.”
That is a pattern that each of us should want to follow.

MJ at six months
And just like that my baby is sitting up! And reaching for toys, loving toys in general actually. It's so funny to watch her eyes get really excited and concentrate hard when you offer her a new toy. I guess since she's so laid back it sneaked up on me that, even though she wasn't moving much, she was still getting stronger. Sometimes I'll look over and she's doing a complete v-up, trying to sit up from a laying position. She hasn't rolled from her back to her belly yet, so I guess she's just doing it her own way! She has rolled from her belly to her back. I set her down one day on her tummy and was surprised at how high up she pushed herself, and whoop, she roooollled right over.
She's also growing a funny little faux hawk. The hairs on the top of her head are getting long and stick straight up. It's pretty adorable. She LOVES head rubs! I'll run my hands through her hair and she gets a crooked little grin. The world is so fun with Molly Joy in it.
The fact that she is constantly sticking her tongue out is just evidence of her perfect comedic timing. I often think how strange it is that we've never had a conversation, per se, with both of us verbally communicating, because I feel like we have been friends for ages and tell each other jokes throughout the day. Just the other day, I was wearing a hoodie and she kept nibbling on the string and looking up with a grin, knowing it was something funny and different she was doing. She will laugh heartily when she's tickled, which she loves, but if you catch her in the right mood, she'll laugh at a sneeze, a boo, anything. The other day in the store she was giggling and giggling and drawing lots of attention because I was fake sneezing. I love to give her an extra tight squeeze when I'm nursing her and she'll always give me the biggest grin when I do. It's going to be hard to stop nursing this one!
Sisters on a six month birthday!
There's a gravitational pull from any lips that find themselves close to a baby's sweet smelling head.
And all Molly wanted to do was to suck on Grover's nose. No teeth yet but she's definitely munching.
They might as well be admiring each other's polish and wedding rings. I can conjure the same scene in about 23 years.
